Assessing the Carlton Davis Trade: Lions and Buccaneers Both Secure Wins in Tampa Bay-Detroit Deal
The Detroit Lions addressed their cornerback needs this offseason with the acquisition of Carlton Davis from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to ESPN reports, Tampa Bay is sending Davis along with a 2024 sixth-round pick and a 2025 sixth-round pick to Detroit, in exchange for a 2024 third-round pick.
Davis, who has spent all six seasons of his NFL career with the Buccaneers, showcased his capabilities with 52 tackles, two interceptions, and nine passes defensed in the previous season.
Despite allowing five passing touchdowns and a 76.3 passer rating to opposing quarterbacks, Davis was a key contributor. With his contract entering its final year and a cap number of $14.4 million, Detroit sees an opportunity to bolster its cornerback corps.
The Lions' cornerback situation has been a concern, especially after last season's struggles. Emmanuel Moseley's limited playing time due to injury and Cam Sutton's subpar performance highlighted the need for improvement.
Moseley's season-ending ACL tear, combined with Sutton's difficulties in coverage, underscored the urgency to fortify the position.
With available cap space, Detroit is taking a calculated risk on Davis, hoping to complement Sutton in the secondary.
Although Davis lacks direct connections to defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn or defensive backs coach Deshea Townsend, his experience and skill set make him a valuable addition.
The Lions anticipate Davis's arrival will contribute to enhancing their pass defense, which ranked near the bottom of the league last season in both pass touchdowns allowed and yards per attempt.
